The course introduces key theoretical approaches and methodologies of analysis and interpretation of art and design works. Dealing with concrete examples, e.g. from the current ZKM-exhibition “Critical Zones”, students will learn how artworks can be described, interpreted and analysed from different theoretical and methodological perspectives by examining their content and aesthetic aspects, reflecting a broader social and cultural context of the exhibition, its curatorial concept, exhibition display etc. Participants will have an opportunity to apply this newly acquainted knowledge not only in a purely textual form, but also by creating their own media products, like short videos, sound features, contributions to social media and so on. These practical projects will demonstrate their understanding and interpretations of chosen subjects, translated into particular audio-visual media formats. The course is part of the Orientation Year Program.
