Participants are invited to a performative field trip across haunted terrains and alternative lifeworlds. Drawing on Mark Fisher's theorization of the weird and the eerie, decolonial walking practices and queer flaneurs we embrace wandering as a research method, tracing abandoned bunkers, castle ruins, former military training areas, healing springs, and encounter anthroposophist farmers and beauticians. Together we drift through landscapes and engage with specific sites through affect, intuition and corporeal memory. We move by foot, gesture, and score: and explore critical and collective modes of cartography and sensing.

Das KunstenfestivalDesArts in Brüssel ist eine der wichtigsten Plattformen für internationales, experimentelles Theater, Tanz und Performance. Alljährlich kommen hier auch Kurator:innen aus aller Welt zusammen. Das Festival ist seit vielen Jahren bekannt für ästhetische Grenzgänge und politische Perspektiven aus unterschiedlichen Regionen.
Für uns wird es nicht nur eine intensive Sichtungsreise, sondern auch eine Gelegenheit, aktuelle Tendenzen der freien internationalen Szene aus nächster Nähe kennenzulernen. Wir besuchen das Abschlusswochende, sehen acht Vorstellungen an drei Abenden (unter anderem von Boris Charmatz, Carolina Bianchi und MEXA) reden mit Kurator:innen und Künstler:innen und schaffen es vermutlich zwischendrin auch noch die ein oder andere Ausstellung anzuschauen.

Upon arrival at the port of Ikaria Island a sign reading “Welcome to the island of Radon” used to welcome visitors. After the Chernobyl disaster it was replaced with “Welcome to the island of Icarus.” The change was prompted by concerns that the presence of the chemical element, omnipresent in the island’s rocks and mineral spring waters could evoke a sense of uneasiness. In this seminar and excursion, we will explore these tensions as they are manifest in the island’s rocky formations, built environments, infrastructures for healing, mountain top villages, bodily rituals and ruins, along with the island’s old and new myths: the site of the fall of Icarus and its recent reputation as a “blue zone”, a place where residents are reputed to have exceptional longevity. A former exile for communists now a site where old and young bodies mingle in radon rich environments.
Reading sessions prior to the excursion will focus on bodies, radon, geology and heritage. In Icaria we will meet with ‘Friends of the 733 Mineral Springs of Greece’, an association working with artists and architects to safeguard the natural and cultural heritage of baths and springs. We will hold events with the municipality of the island and its residents, connect to the local radio, and visit communal celebrations in the form of dance festivals.
Final assignment: The participants will write a seminar paper on the topics and readings explored through the semester. Creative forms of writing, and documenting research are encouraged.

Der Fokus des Karlsruher Festivals dokKa liegt auf dokumentarischen Arbeiten in ihrer medialen Bandbreite und bildet den Ausgangspunkt der Exkursion. Im Unterschied zu klassischen (Dokumentar-) Filmfestivals versteht sich dokKa als Plattform für vielfältige Formen dokumentarischen Erzählens, bei der die Wahl des Mediums – Film, Ton oder Installation – dem Inhalt und der künstlerischen Auseinandersetzung folgt.

This excursion is open to all students of HfG. Priority, however, is given to theory students of KuPhi. Despite (or because of) its disputed and troubled history, Lebanon’s capital Beirut is a vibrant hub for the art, design and theory scene of Western Asia. Having been divided along political and sectarian lines during the Lebanese Civil War (1975-1990), Beirut shared the fate of another (still) divided city: Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus. Despite this parallel, the modern history of Lebanon and Cyprus couldn’t be more different, despite their close proximity of roughly 200 km over the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. Exploring these separated and entangled histories, this excursion is structured by the attendance of the summer school “Critique and Emancipation,” scheduled for July 6-12, 2026, at the Center for Critical Humanities for the Liberal Arts (CHLA) of the American University of Beirut (AUB). Due to the current war in Lebanon, we will attend the summer school on the Mediterraneo Campus of AUB on Cyprus (Pafos). The intensive courses are led by renowned international scholars from the fields of critical theory, continental philosophy, postcolonial theory, feminist theory, and psychoanalysis, among them Ray Brassier (AUB), Lilly Markaki (Royal Holloway London), Tariq Tell (AUB), Ozren Pupovac (University of Rijeka), Maya Andrea Gonzalez (AUB), Lorenzo Chiesa (Newcastle University) and Nadia Bou Ali (AUB). Beirut, das während des libanesischen Bürgerkriegs (1975–1990) entlang politischer und konfessioneller Linien geteilt war, teilte das Schicksal einer anderen (nach wie vor) geteilten Stadt: Nikosia, der Hauptstadt Zyperns. Trotz dieser Parallele könnten die moderne Geschichte des Libanon und die Zyperns unterschiedlicher nicht sein, obwohl nur etwa 200 km östliches Mittelmeer zwischen beiden Ländern liegen. Diese Exkursion, die sich mit diesen getrennten und verflochtenen Geschichten befasst, ist an die Teilnahme an der Sommerschule „Critique and Emancipation“ geknüpft, die vom 6. bis 12. Wir besuchen zwei Produktionen des Festivals „Performing Democracy“ im Rahmen einer Tagesexkursion nach Freiburg: „Die Bewegung – Ringen und Denken“ das Training für eine Performance unter künstlerischer Leitung von Julian Warner, die sich mit dem Verhältnis von Körper, Bewegung und politischem Denken beschäftigt sowie „Backyard [A Field to Search] – The Lecture“, eine performative Lecture der Künstlerinnen Laura Uribe und Sabina Aldana, die das gewaltsame Verschwindenlassen von Menschen in Mexiko thematisiert. Im Anschluss gibt es ein Publikumsgespräch.
