In a 2020 interview, David Lynch reflected, "I would say that picture dictates sound, but sometimes it is the other way around. Sound conjures an image... Sound is 50% of the picture, if not more... and to get sound to marry to the picture is the trick."
Building on that idea, we ask: What if we begin with sound?
Aimed at film students preparing intermediate or final diploma projects—whether short or feature-length, fiction or documentary—the course invites a deep engagement with the creative and technical dimensions of sound. Together, we’ll explore how sound not only supports the image but can lead, shape, or even redefine it.
Participants will gain both theoretical insights and hands-on experience in capturing sound on set. Through the full-scale rehearsal of a scene with actors, you’ll develop a working understanding of the art and technique of sound recording. From the selection and use of microphones and digital recorders to on-set sound strategies, the seminar will help you build a sound practice that is deliberate, expressive, and integral to your filmmaking.
