This workshop explores photographic archives from the perspective of the image producer, questioning how their role influences the reading and understanding of images. While moving from one place to another, photographs provoke various readings that are influenced by the language that sourrounds them (Berger). We will explore among others the civil contract of photography(Azoulay), The death of the author(Barthes, Focult) and The presence of images that should not have been taken, and the absence of images that should have been made (Alloula).
Through readings, discussions, and visual exercises, we will engage with selected texts, including chapters from Obtuse, Flitting By, and In Spite of All – Image Archives in Practice. Notes on Archive 1 by Ines Schaber, to deepen our understanding of archival practices and their implications.
