Monday May 5: Curating Media Art
An overview of curatorial styles, issues of presentation, responsibility, risks and rewards. Examples of working with institutions and artists as curator will be discussed, along with the importance of publications, websites and accessible archives for research.
Tuesday May 6: Activist media art
Media art is a powerful tool for activism: performance, video/film, Augmented Reality, CG, 3D environments, and installation art bring awareness of social and political issues. Examples will include artists engaged in feminist and decolonial topics.
Wednesday May 7: Community and media art
The role of media in collectives, festivals, mailing lists, and not for profit organizations are evident in today’s internet information silos. Community concepts were part of fluxus, new music and video art, often surrounding access to equipment and resources.
Thursday May 8: Online and On-air
Artists’ fascination with television and broadcast will be shown, with early examples of pioneering artists’ interventions. TV was a pioneering component of the 1977 Documenta 6, with the ‘Satellite Telecast’, and Documenta 9, with the 100 day work: ‘Piazza Virtuale’.
Students are obliged to attend all four days. Attendance for all four days is required for a workshop credit.
