The interdisciplinary project “THE NEST” is dedicated to the research and creative transformation of bio-regional materials and value chains.
The aim is to develop a modular, bio-regional pavilion structure that will be presented during the Rundgang (24.-27.07.2025). The seminar takes place in cooperation between Product Design (Freia Achenbach), Digital Fabrication Lab (Simon Gehring) and the 'Living Library' of the Bio Design Lab (Julia Ihls/team). The combination of design, innovative manufacturing technology and sustainable resources creates a spatial narrative that makes the potential of bio-regional materials visible. The focus is on material research and experimental implementation. What properties make bio-regional materials unique? How can they be processed in such a way that they are convincing in terms of both design and function? These questions are at the heart of the project. Regional biomaterials are analyzed, their physical and aesthetic potential is researched and innovative processing techniques are tested. The knowledge gained in this way will flow directly into the design of the pavilion structure. Another focus is on combining sustainable materials with digital production methods. The use of computational tools supports the design language of natural materials and makes targeted use of their structural properties. The result is a flexible, modular system that not only offers an outstanding visual appearance, but also focuses on sustainability aspects. The project offers a unique opportunity to take a hands-on approach to sustainable materials and innovative production techniques - and to actively participate in creating a future that preserves resources.
