Freie Projekte können von Studierenden mit Unterstützung von Lehrenden innerhalb und außerhalb des Fachbereichs entwickelt werden. Um einen Schein zu erhalten, muss das Projekt von mindestens einer Lehrperson betreut worden sein (die auch den Schein ausstellt), durch mindestens 2 bis 3 Einzelgespräche sowie eine abschließende Präsentation im Kolloquium am 10. Juli oder im Open Studio umfassen. Ein freies Projekt muss in Umfang und Ausarbeitungsgrad einem Seminarprojekt in etwa entsprechen, um einen Schein zu erhalten. Pro Studienabschnitt kann ein freies Projekt angerechnet werden.

Free projects can be developed by students with the support of teaching staff in and out of the department. In order to get a certificate the project needs to have been supervised by at least one teacher (who will be the one giving the certificate), through at least 2 or 3 individual consultations, and a final presentation in the colloquium on July 10, or in the Open Studio. A free project needs to be roughly equivalent to a seminar project in terms of size and development to obtain a certificate. Students can be credited for one free project per study period.
