This block-seminar continues the work initiated in Heliophobia – how to display artworks on paper, carried out in collaboration with the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe. Last semester, students developed a range of models and proposals for an innovative exhibition furniture for the Kupferstichkabinett, addressing the challenges of displaying fragile works on paper while offering visitors both comfort and interpretative tools.
In this next phase, we will focus on advancing one proposal towards the production of a prototype. Building on the ideas and models already developed, students will refine a design into detailed working drawings, test materials, and address technical aspects such as ergonomics, conservation requirements, and structural feasibility. Alongside the design process, the seminar will also engage with budgeting and cost calculations, as well as researching and establishing relationships with potential producers and fabricators.
The goal of the seminar is to prepare a single, well-resolved design for prototyping in close dialogue with the Kunsthalle, ensuring that it responds to curatorial, conservation, and public needs alike. By the end of the semester, students will have contributed to a comprehensive set of technical drawings, feasibility studies, and production strategies that will provide the groundwork for the project’s further development, including the possibility of prototyping.
