This intensive 4-day seminar is designed to give directors a hands-on introduction about working with actors, exploring this difficult craft and its challenges.

You will be introduced to a range of techniques and approaches drawn from various theatrical and cinematic traditions, allowing you to start discovering which methods resonate most naturally with your own directorial voice.

At the heart of the seminar lies an exploration of the fundamental principles that govern the director-actor relationship, including how to build trust, establish creative dialogue, and foster an atmosphere of safety and openness on set.

You will start learning the subtle art of conveying your vision clearly and effectively, whether through precise language, evocative imagery, or physical demonstration, while also developing the sensitivity to know when to step back and let the actor find their own path.

A key focus will be placed on the concept of collaboration, as you practice the skills needed to invite actors into a shared creative space rather than simply issuing directives, transforming the rehearsal process into a genuine exchange of ideas and impulses.

Through a series of reading including Judith Weston's texts and carefully designed exercises, you will start engaging with the process of breaking down a script — analysing its structure, subtext, character relationships, and dramatic arc — so that the directorial choice you make is grounded in a thorough understanding of the story being told. Ms Weston will join us online for 1H30 on Wednesday 29th at 7pm Europe time to answer any of your questions.

By the end of the seminar, you will have been introduced to a range of practical techniques, begun to identify your own directorial instincts, and taken initial steps toward translating narrative into coherent, actor-driven work.
