"We are the roots of a cross-cultural relationship. Submarine roots: that is, floating free, not fixed in one position in some primordial spot, but extending in all directions in our world through its network of branches. "(Édouard Glissant)
Score of the Mangrove is a hands-on performance seminar in which students will be introduced to different approaches to body movement, somatic practices and performance, such as Skinner Releasing Technique, Contact Improvisation, and Body-Mind-Centering in dialogue with various artistic and theoretical positions. The mangrove and its muddy environment will serve as a departure point for students to develop their projects.
Mangroves are intertidal trees with complex, aerial, and anchor root systems adapted to saltwater environments. They build forests as widespread networks that make oxygen-poor soils fertile and support biodiversity by creating multi-species wards and protecting shorelines from erosion. In various anti-colonial struggles, mangrove forests served as refuge and hiding spots from the targeting of military airstrikes. The mangrove imaginary evokes resistance, protection, ecological networks, horizontal connections, resilience and the impossibility of separating the entanglement of the community's roots. As Édouard Glissant proposes, a rhizomatic thought extends any "identity" towards relations to others.
Part of the seminar 'Score of the Mangrove' is a preparatory workshop for attending the festival 'Bwa Kayiman: Crossing the Mangrove – on Forests as Sites of Eco-Political Knowledge' at Berlin's House of World Cultures. Bwa Kayiman is the name given to the forest assembly that initiated the 1791 revolution in Haiti. Over two compact seminar days, we will examine the spatial preconditions of the forest and mangroves as places of protection and resistance, learn about the artistic practice of Choublak – a Haitian collective living in Berlin – and work on spatial designs that can translate 'forest knowledge' into an urban environment. https://www.hkw.de/en/programme/bwa-kayiman-crossing-the-mangrove
