“physical architecture, these larger spaces… It is a very communal thing and because of the dimensions of the space itself connecting to the music in the way it does, it creates a very liberating experience…” - Maryanne Amacher
Sound approaches one externally, yet remains primarily an internal space. - Bernhard Leitner
In this seminar, we will look at experimental spatial practices spanning concert music, performance art, sound art, and mixed-media installation art, with attention to social context and artistic intention. Through analysis of specific periods, artists and works, we will devise our own critical methodologies for the creation of sound-based works.
Considering the notion of immersion, we will study architectural sound in context, psychological perception of space, experimental sound spatialization strategies, sensory stimulation, sound synthesis, psychoacoustics, and further discuss notions of spectacle and scale.
How can we create sonic works or enact artistic processes that help us understand and deconstruct our subjectivity? How can we cultivate both individual autonomy and coexistence with one another? What types of epistemological toolsets can we activate to change our interface to reality?
Led by the artist duo Farahnaz Hatam and Colin Hacklander, this seminar takes its name from their format called – sonic activation – which seeks to construct an ever-developing syncretism of spatial sonic expression, active listening and complex sound synthesis within a critique of social relations and norm construction.
Through invitation of special guests, we build skillsets for the creation of immersive performative works with a focus on sound and an awareness of historical and contemporary sonic practices.
This seminar includes theoretical readings, listening exercises, historical work analysis, and experimental compositional exercises.
